With the launch of the ContiSportContact™ 5, Continental has developed a tyre which is equally suitable for sporty cars + SUVs with sporty driving characteristics. With this new development, the tyre engineers have made significant progress in camparison to the popular predecessor ContiSportContact™ 3: Shorter braking distances in all weather conditions.

Reduced fuel consumption and high mileage. This was made possible due to a new compound which focuses on maximum power transmission and provides low rolling resistance whilst driving normally. This rubber compound which carries the name "BlackChilli" uses the various vibrations of the tyre.

Excellent road grip and handling just as safety when cornering. The macro-block design of the tyre’s outside shoulder provides a larger contact area, which can therefore adapt optimally to the road surface. The ContiSportContact™ 5 offers improved road grip and thus more safety when cornering.

Shorter braking distances in all weather conditions. When braking, the tyre has a high natural frequency within the compound. Short-chain polymers in the Black Chilli compound of the ContiSportContact™ 5 react to this braking frequency and thus provide optimal energy absorption. The resulting heat shortens the braking distance on wet and dry roads.

Reduced fuel consumption and high mileage. At a constant speed, the vibrations in the compound are significantly lower. The long-chain polymers within the compound can release the absorbed energy better, resulting in considerably reduced rolling resistance. Thus, the tyre runs more easily and remains cool – for a higher mileage and a reduced fuel consumption.

SSR stands for SelfSupportingRunflat Tire

The SSR principle:

Unlike conventional tires, the SSR principle is based on a reinforced self-supporting sidewall. This prevents the inside of the tire from getting pinched between the road and the rim and from slipping into the rim well in the event of a loss of inflation. The SSR's reinforced sidewall enables the car to continue on its way at a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) for up to
80 km (50 miles), depending on road conditions and vehicle weight.

Communication between tire and driver

Because of the good riding comfort SSR tires afford, drivers hardly notice any pressure loss in the event of a flat, to increase both safety in the event of a flat and performance during normal driving, the SSR system is supplied together with an inflation warning system – either TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) or DDS (Deflation Detection System), both of which were likewise developed by Continental. These warning systems alert the driver when a drop in inflation pressure requires investigation via a display on the instrument panel.

EU Tire Label and Efficiency Classes?

The European Union has introduced the EU Tire Label by Regulation (No. 1222/2009) identically and bindingly for all EU member states. It applies to passenger car tires, light commercial vehicle tires and heavy commercial vehicle tires produced after 01.07.2012.

Three different areas are tested: rolling resistance, wet grip and the rolling noise the tire makes on the road.

The following are not affected by the EU Tire Label: retreaded tires, professional off-road tires, racing tires, tires with additional devices to improve traction such as spiked tires, T-type emergency tires, special tires for fitting to vehicles first registered before 1 October 1990, tires with a maximum authorised speed of 80 km/h, tires for rims with a nominal diameter of 254 mm or less or 635 mm or more.

With this regulation, the European Union is pursuing the goal of promoting economic and ecological efficiency in road traffic as well as increasing road safety on the one hand, and on the other hand, granting consumers more product transparency and at the same time serving as an active decision-making aid.

Already during the incorporation, experts criticise the fact that the EU Tire Label unfortunately only shows a few product characteristics. Apart from rolling resistance, wet grip and rolling noise, which are the main focus of EU tire labelling, tires have much more important and safety-relevant product characteristics, such as aquaplaning properties, driving stability, service life, braking properties on dry and wet roads, behaviour in wintry conditions, etc.

Tire manufacturers point out that test results from various institutions and journals remain an important information medium for the end consumer. These tests usually focus on further safety-relevant product characteristics besides the EU standard qualifications for tire labelling, which are always important for the final customer.
